Come see the Tailgate Truck in person at lot A-3!

This was one tailgate vehicle that just about didn’t happen, but more on that later. Over the course of tailgating we had built up our tailgate to include several items we just don’t understand how people do without.

Here is a list of our tailgate contraptions we have created to set our tailgating efforts apart form the rest.
  • Gas Powered Blender
  • Tents with sides and two construction heaters. (Need to keep the women happy!)
  • Custom ISU Helmet hitch mounted grill
  • One 1970 Ford Vanette!
The Vanette belongs to Charley Bogwill and Jeff Burdick and we call our tailgate the BNBTLG8, that’s what our plates say anyway. Together the two of us had made the grill, bar, and now the Vanette. As the 2008 season was approaching we were looking for something new to add to our tailgate, as our latest addition was the bar. We naturally thought about a vehicle we could customize and make our statement with. We looked at Buses, Box Vans, Step Vans, Fire Engines, and Ambulances, you name it and we thought about all the possibilities for each. The season started and we were without a vehicle to call our own, but the search stayed alive. Just about when we were going to call the search off I (Jeff), located a gem on eBay one day. I immediately contacted Charley telling him I had found “THE” vehicle that we needed to purchase, he immediately agreed. We decided that we needed to take a look at the old gal before we purchased her, so that same day we took off on a 5.5 hour trip, each way, to go take a look.

If we liked what we saw we were going to try and buy it before the auction ended. This is where the story gets a little interesting because we liked it but I didn’t like the fact that the guy selling it was asking more than what he would sell it to me for before we started our 5.5 hour trip. In the end we went home empty handed because we were $250 dollars away from his new asking price. I will have to admit that between the two of us I am the bigger penny pincher. The entire ride home I had to hear how I let your dream slip away over $250 dollars, hell I still hear it.

I kept saying that if it were meant to be we’d win the Auction and she’d be ours. Well we didn’t win the auction, hell we didn’t even bid on it, hoping to keep the final price down. As the biding came to an end the asking price was above our agreed upon top dollar so we let it go. Two weeks later I received a call from its owner saying the guy who won the auction had not responded to his many attempts to secure a down payment so he was willing to sell it to us. So then the build began.

We won’t bore you with all the trouble that modifying a 1970 Vanette is, parts are not readily available, but we will list the modifications that we have done and some of our future plans. One thing to note is all of the modification up to this point has been done by us. We have purchased a vinyl cutter and welder to assist us in our effort.

Current Modifications:
  • Custom TV mount allowing viewing of the 42” LCD TV inside or outside of the Vanette (HD Satellite)
  • Bench seating with underneath storage
  • Storage cabinets with full extension glides
  • Authentic Astroturf flooring
  • Interior painting
  • LED signs added to front window
  • Vinyl graphics that include the opponents helmet for each home game
  • Satellite mount on front bumper
  • Hitch mounts front and rear (Front for the grill and rear for the bar)
